IceCube discovery on cover of Science Magazine

In a paper published in Science, the IceCube project, which includes Penn State faculty Doug Cowen, Tyce DeYoung and Peter Meszaros, reports the discovery of the highest-energy neutrino interactions observed to date. The image on the cover of the issue shows the hit distribution (red corresponding to early, green to late) from a neutrino interaction event observed in the IceCube detector on 14 July 2011. Light from this transfer of 250 TeV of energy fills a sphere 600 meters across. This event, among the highest-energy neutrino interactions ever observed, forms part of the first evidence for a high-energy neutrino flux of astrophysical origin.
