In April 2014, the IceCube neutron detector at the South Pole announced the discovery of a new cosmic neutrino event ("Big Bird") with an energy exceeding two PeV, double that of the highest energy cosmic neutrinos observed previously. The American Physical Society has selected this discovery as one of the "Top 10 Physics News Stories in 2014." The IceCube effort at Penn State is led by Doug Cowen, Professor of Physics and Professor of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
