The ultimate size limit for functional devices is the single molecule. Biology is built upon an extraordinarily rich set of molecular-scale devices, such as DNA (information storage), membrane proteins (valves, pumps, receptors), lipids (barriers, membranes) and motor proteins. Researchers are just starting to learn how to design molecules as functional devices, for both electronics and motors.
