Gravitational wave detection and measurement is an unprecedented effort in
observational astronomy. In my talk I will discuss how over the past two
decades progress has allowed us to be prepared for gravitational-wave
astronomy. These include numerous studies on understanding the dynamics of
sources, development and deployment of optimal algorithms for their
detection and methods for measuring and extracting signal and source
parameters. We are now in a position to not only detect gravitational waves
but exploit the data for exploring the dark and dense Universe.
