Loop quantum gravity arises as the continuum limit of a family of generalized lattice theories. We will line out how to lift this procedure from the kinematical to the dynamical level. A full solution would provide the construction of the full physical Hilbert space, which is out of reach for an explicit construction. However, as will be shown in this talk,  these concepts provide a consistent truncation scheme for the calculation of physical quantities, for instance for cosmological applications, and elucidate the concept of physical vacuum.
