CQG: Sachs' Free Data in Connection Variables

I will present the local Hamiltonian dynamics of general relativity with real connection variables on a null foliation. In the first part of the talk, I will review some possibly not widely known properties
and results of the Hamiltonian formalism on null hypersurfaces, first for a scalar field theory and then for gravity in metric variables. I will then describe the situation for the Einstein-Cartan action in real connection variables. I will highlight some peculiar features and potential applications of the formalism. In the final and more technical part, I will discuss the equivalent of Sachs’ constraint-free initial data as projections of connection components related to null rotations, the origin and meaning of the tertiary constraints present in the canonical structure, and some effects of
torsion.
