I will review the main idea of asymptotic safety in quantum field theory, and will highlight major results on its application to quantum gravity. I will then discuss first results testing the phenomenological viability of asymptotically safe quantum gravity: Any model of quantum gravity that is viable as a fundamental description of spacetime in our universe must be able to accommodate the observed matter degrees of freedom and their properties. I will discuss the compatibility of the Standard Model of particle physics with asymptotic safety, with a particular focus on the fermions and the Higgs sector.
