A high luminosity high energy polarized electron ion collider was strongly supported and recommended by the US Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) in its last Long Range Planning activity. The DOE has taken the first step towards its realization by asking the National Academy of Sciences to independently evaluate its scientific mission. Results are expected in spring 2018, beyond which official steps towards its realization could begin. I will present a science case of this future faculty, and give an overview of the overall status and plans for its realization.
