We provide a general introduction to the production and detection of ultrahigh energy astrophysical neutrinos, briefly describing conjectured neutrino sources and the array of large-scale devices used to detect their neutrino emissions.  We then present evidence for the first detection of these long-sought neutrinos with the IceCube detector at the South Pole, Antarctica.  We also present the science motivation for a proposed new IceCube in-fill array, PINGU, designed to measure the neutrino mass hierarchy using atmospheric neutrinos.
