Optical Control of a Quantum System: Where the Macro Meets the Micro

The aim is to make the quantum system work for us. That involves control of the quantum system, monitoring its state and protecting it from the environmental degradation. All three functions involve the interaction of a quantum system with a macroscopic system. I will describe (1) a scheme for a quantum network of electron spins communicating by photons and (2) the quantum theory of decoherence of the electron spin with the quantum dot environment and methods of recovering coherence by optical control of the electron spin. I hope that, beyond applications, these theories add to the understanding of basic quantum mechanics in concepts such deterministic control, cooling, decoherence and irreversibility. * Work done in collaboration with Renbao Liu and Wang Yao.
