Abundance and correlation properties of halos probe important features of the Universe, such as its constituents (through their redshift dependence) and its initial conditions (through their scale dependence). I will discuss recent results in the so-called excursion set theory, that uses random walks to derive simple analytical predictions for these qualities, and compare them with simulations.
