Eklund Lectures

Main Content

Peter Clay Eklund was born in New York and grew up in California. He received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from UC Berkeley and Purdue, respectively. Peter was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, working with Mildred Dresselhaus, thus beginning a 35 year collaboration with her and Gene Dresselhaus. Peter then joined the Physics Department at the University  of  Kentucky,  where  he  worked  from  1977 to 1999, when he came to Penn State. When Peter died, in 2009, he held the position of Distinguished Professor of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering. Peter was an amazingly creative scientist and devoted teacher, much loved by all who knew him. The Peter Clay Eklund Memorial Fund is based on contributions from our community and supports the Awards given here. Contributions to this Fund come from his colleagues and friends, as well as Honda Research USA. Two kinds of awards are being made in Peter’s honor: to creative scientists, and to talented graduate students who demonstrate excellence in both research and public speaking. The latter group is chosen on the basis of a competition among all current physics students.
