Pierre Auger Observatory

Auger Google Earth/Sky News

In reverse chronological order

9 October 2009

The file Published_Auger_Events_Sky.kmz has been updated to add a layered composite image of the Centaurus A AGN, an animation of the Cen A supermassive black hole, and to correct the scaling of the Cen A VLA image, which was too large.

16 September 2009

Google has updated the imagery used in Argentina such that all of the Pierre Auger Observatory area is now imaged at fairly high resolution. As a consequence, parts of the array previously lacking detail now explicitly show structures not previously seen, such as the Los Morados and Loma Amarilla fluorescence telescopes, as well as the two Central Laser Facilities. But also the imagery did not exactly coincide with the exact known measured coordinates of these facilities, so that new Google Earth model files were produced with the structures slightly shifted to match the Google Earth imagery.

The following Auger South model files have been updated to reflect this: Pierre_Auger_Observatory_English.kmz, Observatorio_Pierre_Auger_Espanol.kmz, Pierre_Auger_Observatorium_Deutsch.kmz, Osservatorio_Pierre_Auger_Italiano.kmz and Auger_tour.kmz .

4 June 2009

A new Google Earth/Sky movie is available:

  • Exploration in Google Earth and Sky of one very high energy hybrid event correlated with 3 active galactic nuclei (about 73 MB): AugerEvt.wmv .

25 May 2009

This Auger Google Earth Web Site was reorganized to match the style of the official Auger Web Site.

9 March 2009

The Auger North model files have been updated to reflect the evolving plan for the possible Northern Auger tank positions, on a sqrt(2) mile grid over 8,000 sq. miles (thanks to Fred Sarazin for the updated coordinates!). The model files affected are:

Auger North model in English: Pierre_Auger_Observatory_North.kmz

Auger North model in Spanish: Observatorio_Pierre_Auger_Norte.kmz

Auger North model in German: Pierre_Auger_Observatorium_Nord.kmz

Auger North model in Italian: Osservatorio_Pierre_Auger_Nord.kmz

5 November 2008

The Auger South model files have been updated to reflect the positions of the tanks deployed as of the end of October 2008. These are Pierre_Auger_Observatory_English.kmz, Observatorio_Pierre_Auger_Espanol.kmz, Pierre_Auger_Observatorium_Deutsch.kmz, and Osservatorio_Pierre_Auger_Italiano.kmz.

4 March 2008

The Auger South model files have been updated to reflect the positions of the tanks deployed as of February 2008. These are Pierre_Auger_Observatory_English.kmz, Observatorio_Pierre_Auger_Espanol.kmz, Pierre_Auger_Observatorium_Deutsch.kmz, and Osservatorio_Pierre_Auger_Italiano.kmz.

Two new movies of Google Earth/Sky exploration are available:

Exploration in Google Sky of the arrival directions of some of the highest-energy events in the direction of the Centaurus A active galactic nucleus (about 31 MB): Auger_GoogleSky.wmv .

A history using Google Earth of Auger tank deployment from 2002 to 2008 (about 21 MB): SDTankHistory.wmv .

21 December 2007

The arrival directions of the most energetic Auger events (above 57 EeV) are now viewable in Google Sky: Published_Auger_Events_Sky.kmz .

The proposed Auger North model has been translated into Spanish (gracias a Jose Bellido!): Observatorio_Pierre_Auger_Norte.kmz, into German (danke a Markus Risse!): Pierre_Auger_Observatorium_Nord.kmz, and into Italian (grazie a Daniela Maurizio e i studenti della Classe 4C del Liceo Scientifico E. Majorana di Moncalieri (Torino)!): Osservatorio_Pierre_Auger_Nord.kmz.

11 December 2007

An Italian translation of the Auger Google Earth model files is now available (grazie per la traduzione a Daniela Maurizio e i studenti della Classe 4C del Liceo Scientifico E. Majorana di Moncalieri (Torino)!).

6 December 2007

A new file of placemarks has been created for the proposed Auger North model in English: Pierre_Auger_Observatory_North.kmz

The bank of deployed surface detector stations in Pierre_Auger_Observatory_English.kmz has been updated to reflect the status of the Observatory as of November 2007. Small graphical improvements have been made (new tank symbols, new Loma Amarilla 3D model, all images are now embedded in the pop-up explanation boxes). The changes have been propagated to the Spanish, German and Italian models as well.

New events seen with 4 fluorescence detectors have been added to the bank of Auger events in 3D.

24 August 2007

A German translation of the Auger Google Earth model files is now available (dank Karl-Heinz Kampert für die Übersetzung!).

Movies of Google Earth explorations of Auger are now available.

1 May 2007

A bank of Auger events in 3D is now available.

17 April 2007

A Spanish translation of the Auger Google Earth model files is now available (gracias a José Bellido por la traducción!).

A "Tour of Auger" is now available, suitable to use in public presentations to describe the Observatory (thanks to Paul Sommers).

Google Earth can now be used to view selected actual Auger events in 3D.
